I just got back from 5 days in Barcelona, a fascinating place. My trip was the result of a competition prize, which I won back in 2010.. more in the AJ here, and the entry here..

Originally the prize was a trip to Istanbul, the city of domes. However it didn’t quite work out that way and instead I chose to go to Barcelona, a first for me. It was a fantastic few days, with mostly glorious sunshine. As well as absorbing everything the city has to offer [including a trip to Camp Nou for some barca fútbol], we also took a day trip to Montserrat for some amazing views, followed by a wine tour at Parés Baltà [highly recommended].

Amongst the sightseeing, I made time to make a few quick sketches, a nice alternative to endless photos.

Calton is an area in the east end of Glasgow with a weaving heritage, a theme I’ve played with a lot in this drawing. The drawing is a private commission and will be on public display in Calton.

We were excited this week to see the opening of Venice Takeaway: Ideas to Change British Architecture at the RIBA, London. Our work, and that of the 9 other groups, is showing until the 27th April.

As you may already know, on the 1st February 2012 I embarked on a challenge called 28 Drawings Later. The aim of which was to make a drawing for every day in February. I, and 500 other participants, completed this and an exhibition was held in Glasgow. However, being inclined to push myself that little but further, I set myself the personal goal to continue for a year, some 365 days. I finished on the 31st January this year and now have a sketchy visual diary, all set within 12 mini moleskines.

The year was quite eventful. Gratuitous really, otherwise I might have had to carry on to year two. There were trips to Belfast, Paris, Moscow, London, Skye, and Venice; exhibiting at the Venice Biennale; and, amongst other things a wedding and a baby. From a quick survey, there are 47 drawings of Glasgow; 39 of Italy; 9 of Paris; and 9 of escape. Sketches of new experiences mix with memories which preoccupy me from places I’ve been in the past. On reflection, my time seems to have been spent toying between an unadulterated love of architecture and tearing my hair out with the profession, such is the nature of a young Architect[almost], I believe.

Thanks are due to my family, friends and colleagues, all of whom provided the moral support, inspiration and the occasional kick up the proverbial which I needed to continue. I’m now attempting 365 days of no drawing whatsoever.. but I suspect I’m likely to fail at that challenge.
